Peer Support Work is really radical in the broad scope of work PSW’s do; like myself. While we are striving to create a ‘healing’ space together we are also trying to design & organize. This may be therapeutic, however, we are not therapists. We are not professionals by any means, but we are experts in what we have lived through! As a Peer Support Worker, I meet people where they’re at and use strength-based approaches to help my community. PSWs provide a unique knowledge-based approach to care, as we have our own lived expertise- this doesn’t aim to “fix” people, but rather create a space of understanding and allow people to take charge of their own recovery. I work primarily with Transitional Aged Youth and I draw upon relatable experiences focused on individual strengths and recovery- as both me and my client’s/peers advocate for change both in systems of care and in broader society to eliminate the harms that have impacted our peers and help support them by expanding opportunities for growth; with that being said- I’ve interacted with a surplus of marignalized Trans/Queer youth who are in need of gender-affirming gear; clients might see support (clinical) once a month, navigate through a long waiting list for services, may have been discharged but still need support and or a warm
transition to community/other services. With the barriers to accessing support, PSWs can act as a great place-holder for clients to explore different supports based on their needs- I would love to give access to my clients to services like gender gears, in order for them to feel like they’re getting the best support that they can receive.
